Getting to Know Brenda Ferrulli
Where do you call Home?
A small town with no stoplight is where I am from. Woodlake is the town and its in the central valley of California; literally a rock throw away from the beautiful Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
When did you first learn about the Fisher House?
I heard about the Fisher House but it wasn’t until 2017, when I was diagnosed with cervical cancer that I was able to see first hand the generosity and compassion that the Fisher House has for service members and their families. I had the opportunity to stay at the Walter Reed Fisher House during my treatment. I fell in love with the atmosphere.
Why have you decided to volunteer with us?
As a teenager, I’ve always been civic minded. Volunteering at the local Family Resource Center and also becoming a lead for Habitat for Humanity. But I volunteer, because like I said, I fell in love with the atmosphere. My time at the Fisher House as a patient really changed my life. The families we had the pleasure to share the Fisher House with, in a way, also became an extension of our family while we stayed there. We began to make relationships with so many extraordinary people. All who were going through their own struggles but were also willing to take the time to get to know me and my story. The staff was great too. So attentive and caring, they became part of the family too. But the little books that are kept in the desks of each room are what sealed the deal for me that I needed to give back to this mission. These books have stories written by people who stayed in the room before me. These stories are so touching, the writers really put all their feelings and emotion into them. I wish there was even more I could do.
Tell us about yourself!
Outside the Fisher House I run a Family Child Care program where I have the opportunity to teach children. Whether the kids come to me on a recurring basis or I am providing hourly child care for families PCS’ing in or out, my dedication is to the development of their young minds. In my spare time I really enjoy doing yoga, working out, meditation, and reading/watching self-help information. With my family, we love to travel especially to places outdoors. We love hiking together and enjoy all the wonderful parks that Europe has to offer.
